What are the causes of (Central) Auditory Processing Disorder?

  • Chronic ear infections, particularly during the critical language development period of 0 - 4 years of age. It is important to know that many ear infections are not associated with pain or irritability and consequently go unnoticed.
  • Some processing problems are thought to be genetic where other family members display similar processing weaknesses.
  • (C)APD has sometimes been associated with birth trauma, maturational delays, as well as irregular development of the central nervous system.
